Wilmington is a historic riverfront town nestled between the Cape River and the Atlantic Ocean. Founded in 1739, Wilmington prospered during its early years as a major port and ship-building center. Today it thrives as a premier tourist and filmmaking destination. Downtown Wilmington offers shopping, nightlife, theatrical productions, and outstanding restaurants. Kure and Carolina Beach are about 19 miles south of Wilmington, on the southernmost tip of Pleasure Island, North Carolina. This is a pictureque barrier island nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cape Fear River. You'll find the beachfront community of Kure and Carolina Beach easy to navigate. Just south of Kure Beach lies Fort Fisher. Fort Fisher was the site of the largest land-sea battle fought during the Civil War.
